Jeet Kune Do (JKD)

What do you teach?

Our Academy teaches a range of martial arts systems but primarily Bruce Lee’s Jeet Kune Do.
Other systems that we cover include:
General Self Defence,
Chum Sut Wing Tzun,
Kali,
Silat,
and Irish Stick Fighting (separate class).
Martin O’Neill and his Instructor team Niall Hughes and David Park (both 5th degree black belts), Dude and Mark (senior students and apprentice instructors) cover a wide spectrum of topics, and there's always something interesting to learn regarding getting better self-confidence, knowledge, fitness, health, and well-being, and self-defence to keep you and your family safe.Instructor Martin O’Neill Msc, has over 40 years of experience and is a Certified Full Instructor. He is the Author of “The Jeet Kune Do Mindset” and “ Street Survival Essential Self Defence for the Streets” available on Amazon. You can learn quickly and revisit skills in classes or private lessons. We introduce you to many concepts and ideas you may not have had access to. We teach with genuine practical applications, humour, and a down-to-earth martial arts presentation. All are presented and accessible regardless of the complexity of the topic, each person makes progress at their own pace.Belt and Certification are available according to knowledge, interest, and skill. We present a non-competitive, yet challenging and welcoming space in which powerful truths are presented in ways that become good practice rather than the latest fad or fashion. The approach takes a life long learning approach and is not superficial, in-your-face, shouting at you about how to be tough, have the perfect body, be the envy of your friends, be the best or the greatest. It will feel accepting, welcoming, open, honest, kind, and challenging. You will develop your physical ability, your wellbeing and your view of yourself whilst engaging at training.

Inosanto Academy (USA)

Martin ONeill is a certified Associate Instructor under Sifu Guro Tuhan Dan Inosanto and has an extensive background in the Academy curriculum which is a vast one.Jeet Kune Do (JKD), a martial art created by Bruce Lee, and Kali, a Filipino martial art, share similarities in their focus on adaptability and practical effectiveness in combat. JKD, known as "the way of the intercepting fist," emphasizes a non-dogmatic approach, encouraging practitioners to have essential skills and an open mind to explore various martial arts styles and adapt to different fighting situations. Kali, or Filipino Martial Arts (FMA), focuses on weapons (sticks, knives, etc.) and empty hand techniques, with an emphasis on using any weapon and also grappling and striking. Both JKD and Kali share a common ground in their emphasis on practicality and real-world application, this can make them valuable additions to a mixed martial arts (MMA) sports skillset.Key Concepts of Jeet Kune Do (JKD):Adaptability:
JKD encourages practitioners to adapt their techniques and strategies based on the opponent and the situation.
Interception:
JKD emphasises the principle of intercepting the opponent's attack or movement, often using quick and decisive actions.
Economy of Motion:
JKD prioritizes efficient and effective movements, minimizing wasted effort and maximising speed and power.
Simultaneous Defense and Attack:
JKD incorporates the concept of defending and attacking simultaneously, as seen in Wing Tzun and European fencing principles.
Key Concepts of Kali (Filipino Martial Arts):Weapon-Based Philosophy and Skills:
Kali is a proven warfare method and heavily focused on mobility, and adaptability using weaponry and empty hands, machete and sword, stick fighting, knife fighting, and other weapon-based techniques.
Empty Hand Skills:
Kali also includes techniques for striking, grappling, and trapping with empty hands.
Long Range and Close Quarter Combat:
Kali emphasizes long-range and close-quarters combat, particularly in edged weapons, and stick and knife fighting.
Mental Agility:
Kali is known for developing mental agility and emphasises the ability to adapt to changing situations.
How can JKD and Kali benefit an MMA sports competitor?(There are no sports rules in JKD or Kali however the approach can assist in MMA)Adaptability:
JKD's emphasis on adaptability and real-world application can help MMA practitioners develop a more flexible and reactive fighting style.
Weapon Awareness:
Kali's focus on stick and knife fighting and sparring can provide MMA practitioners with a deeper understanding of angles of attack, mobility, and weapon use, which can be valuable in self-defense scenarios.
Grappling and Striking:
JKD and Kali both incorporate grappling and striking techniques, which can complement an MMA practitioner's existing skillset.
Mental Discipline:
The emphasis on mental agility and discipline in both JKD and Kali can enhance an MMA practitioner's mental toughness and focus.
In summary, JKD and Kali can be valuable additions to an MMA practitioner's arsenal, offering unique skills and concepts that enhance their adaptability, combat effectiveness, and mental resilience.

Irish Stick Fighting
(Self Defence)

What is Irish Stick Fighting?

Irish stick fighting is a traditional martial art involving the use of a shillelagh—a sturdy wooden stick, typically made from blackthorn or oak, ranging from 2 to 4 feet in length. This is a unique 2 handed martial arts that is currently enjoying a revival. What do classes look like? Our 45 min class focuses on a range of footwork, self-defence, focus, fitness, single and two handed attacks, a range of blocks and practical applications. Some sparring is practiced with protective equipment and soft sticks. There is a focus on learning in a warm, welcoming and friendly environment with a strong emphasis on having a bit of craic.Do you need to use a Shillelagh?Although a shillelagh is used in training, any long stick could be used in application. This is particularly useful for those who go walking and would like to learn to defence themselves or those interested in learning a unique Irish Martial Art. If you do not have your own Shillelagh, come along and try anyway with one of our training sticks. Everyone is welcome to come and join.

History

Irish stick fighting, a unique and storied martial art, is deeply rooted in Ireland’s history and culture. Its origins are often connected to the use of the shillelagh (pronounced “sheleighly” or “shalalay”), a traditional wooden walking stick, often made from blackthorn wood. This essay explores the history of Irish stick fighting, the significance of the shillelagh, and the role of faction fights in this martial tradition.Irish Stick Fighting (Bataireacht) likely dates back to medieval times, serving as a practical means of self-defense when other weapons were inaccessible. The shillelagh became the weapon of choice, especially during periods when British laws restricted people from carrying arms. Its design—often with a knobbed end—made it effective both as a walking aid and a weapon.

Cross Training Martial Arts

Cross Training Martial Arts

You can concentrate on other individual or specific martial arts if you choose.
Cross-training multiple martial arts involves practicing several different styles to develop a more versatile and well-rounded skill set, enhancing adaptability, athletic performance, and a deeper understanding of various combat principles. It exposes practitioners to diverse techniques and philosophies, addressing gaps in a single art and leading to a more comprehensive approach to self-defence. While it requires commitment, significant time and careful management, cross-training offers substantial personal growth and a broader perspective on the martial arts.
Key Benefits
Enhanced Versatility and Adaptability: No single art has all the answers or covers all aspects of combat, so cross-training helps develop skills in long, middle, and close-quarter range areas, making you more effective in different situations.
Improved Athleticism: Different martial arts require different movements and muscle groups, which sharpen hand-eye coordination, balance, and overall athletic potential.Greater Understanding of Combat: By learning different systems and self-defence, you gain insight into new strategies, tactics, and philosophies, allowing you to anticipate and counter opponents' moves.Personal and Philosophical Growth: Training in diverse arts fosters interest, humility, discipline, and empathy, providing a deeper understanding of yourself and other cultures.Practical Considerations
Time Management: Training in multiple arts requires commitment. It's important to manage your schedule to allow for adequate practice, rest, and recovery to avoid overstretching yourself.
Focus and Goals: Clearly define your objectives. Define your goals: to become a more well-rounded martial artist, to gain confidence, or to acquire specific skills?
Choosing a Path: You can focus on specific areas, such as Jun Fan Gung Fu, JKD Kickboxing, Chum Sut Wing Tzun, Kali, Irish Stick Fighting, and Grappling for a well-rounded experience, or choose elements of all of them.Respecting Culture and Instructors: When attending classes at our Academy always be helpful and respectful of the culture, the instructor's teaching methods, and follow their curriculum as it's being taught. Avoid critiquing or instructing other students.Integrating Knowledge: Don't impose your knowledge from one art onto another. Instead, look for connections and complementary ideas that can enhance your overall skill set. Don’t bore the students with your tough-guy stories and supersonic skills.

Why should I study JKD?

Starting a martial art can feel intimidating. Many people wonder if they are too old, too unfit, or simply not “the martial arts type.” But Bruce Lee’s Jeet Kune Do (JKD) is not about fitting into a mold. It is about discovering what works for you, both in self-defense and in life. Jeet Kune Do, which means “The Way of the Intercepting Fist,” is Bruce Lee’s personal martial art and philosophy. It is practical, adaptable, and deeply focused on self-growth.For beginners, training in JKD offers many benefits: practical self-defense, improved fitness, sharper awareness, and a major boost in confidence and self-esteem. Here are some of the most important reasons why starting Jeet Kune Do might be one of the best decisions you ever make.

1. Building Real Confidence

One of the biggest benefits of JKD training is the confidence it develops. Many people begin martial arts feeling unsure of themselves, whether in their physical abilities, their ability to handle conflict, or even their day-to-day challenges.JKD helps change this because:You learn practical techniques that actually work in real-life situations. You develop the ability to protect yourself and loved ones, which gives peace of mind. You experience progress, step by step, and realize you are capable of much more than you thought.Confidence doesn’t come from pretending—it comes from knowing. Knowing you can defend yourself if needed changes the way you carry yourself. You stand taller, you move with purpose, and others notice.

2. Growing Self-Esteem

Where confidence comes from what you can do, self-esteem comes from how you see yourself. Many beginners struggle with self-doubt or the feeling that they’re “not good enough.” Bruce Lee himself experienced this at times, which is why he stressed the importance of personal growth through martial arts.Training in JKD boosts self-esteem because:You set small, achievable goals and succeed at them. You begin to see your own body as strong, capable, and valuable. You learn to appreciate yourself—not by comparing to others, but by improving from where you started. This is incredibly empowering, especially for beginners who may have avoided martial arts out of fear or self-consciousness. Every punch, kick, or drill becomes proof that you are capable, worthy, and improving.

3. Practical Self-Defence

One of Bruce Lee’s main reasons for creating JKD was his belief that many martial arts had become too rigid or ceremonial to be effective in a real fight. Jeet Kune Do is direct and simple. It teaches you how to end a confrontation quickly and protect yourself without unnecessary movements. As a beginner, you won’t be overwhelmed with complicated forms to memorize. Instead, you’ll learn clear, functional techniques like:The straight lead punch.Simple kicks that stop an opponent from closing in.Footwork that helps you move out of danger quickly. For many, knowing they have these tools immediately builds confidence and reduces fear of confrontation. JKD isn’t about fighting for the sake of it—it’s about being prepared and staying safe.

4. Awareness: The First Step to Safety

In JKD, awareness is considered more important than any punch or kick. Most fights or dangerous encounters can be avoided if you are alert, aware of your surroundings, and tuned in to people’s body language. As a beginner, you’ll practice:Noticing exits and safe spaces in public places.Reading subtle signs that a situation might be turning aggressive.Staying calm and composed under pressure so you can respond wisely. This kind of awareness spills over into everyday life. You may find yourself more observant, more present in the moment, and more sensitive to the needs of others.

5. Simplicity That Works

Many people hesitate to start martial arts because they imagine years of memorizing long sequences or complex kata. JKD is different. Bruce Lee believed in keeping things simple and effective. For beginners, this means you get results quickly. You learn the most direct way to move, strike, and defend. This makes JKD less intimidating than many other arts and more rewarding early on.Simplicity doesn’t mean there’s nothing to learn—rather, it means you’ll always be refining and improving the essentials. Just like playing an instrument, mastery comes not from doing a thousand flashy things, but from doing the basics well.

6. Physical Fitness and Energy

Another powerful reason to begin JKD is the physical transformation it encourages. Many people who start are not in perfect shape, and that’s okay. Training builds your fitness gradually and naturally. With regular practice, you’ll notice:More energy in daily life.Stronger muscles and better endurance.Increased flexibility and quicker reactions.Unlike working out in a gym, JKD keeps fitness exciting. You’re not just lifting weights or running on a treadmill—you’re training your body to move with power, speed, and purpose. The sense of progress makes you want to keep going.

7. Stress Relief and Mental Focus

Modern life can feel overwhelming. Stress, anxiety, and constant distractions can wear us down. JKD training provides a healthy outlet. When you’re punching pads, practicing footwork, or sparring with a partner, your mind is fully present. The worries of the day fade away. This mental reset builds resilience. You learn to:Stay calm under pressure.Focus on the task at hand.Release frustration and tension in a safe, constructive way. Many beginners find that training JKD not only makes them calmer but also helps them think more clearly in their personal and professional lives.

8. Personal Growth Through Philosophy

Bruce Lee didn’t just teach fighting—he taught living. His famous saying, “Be water, my friend,” reminds us to be adaptable, flexible, and open to change. JKD is a martial art with a built-in life philosophy. As a beginner, this philosophy helps you:Accept that you don’t need to be perfect—you just need to keep growing.Learn to adapt when life doesn’t go as planned.See challenges as opportunities, not obstacles.JKD training becomes a journey of self-discovery. You’re not just learning to fight—you’re learning about who you are and who you can become.

9. Inclusiveness: Anyone Can Begin

Another reason to start JKD is that it welcomes everyone. You don’t need to be young, strong, or athletic to benefit. The art adapts to your body and your needs. If you’re smaller, you’ll learn techniques to handle bigger opponents. If you’re older, you can train at a pace that suits your fitness. If you’re brand new to martial arts, you’ll find JKD straightforward and approachable. This inclusiveness makes it an excellent starting point for anyone looking to enter the martial arts world without pressure or fear of judgment.

10. A Lifelong Journey

Finally, JKD is not just something you try for a few months and forget. For many, it becomes a lifelong path of growth. The lessons in confidence, awareness, simplicity, and self-expression never stop unfolding. You may start JKD to learn self-defense, but along the way you discover better health, stronger relationships, and deeper self-understanding. It is a martial art that continues to grow with you, no matter your age or stage of life.

Conclusion: Why Beginners Should Start Jeet Kune Do

For a beginner, stepping onto the mat for the first time can be a life-changing experience. Training in Bruce Lee’s Jeet Kune Do offers far more than punches and kicks—it gives you the tools to live with confidence, self-esteem, and awareness. It helps you protect yourself while also teaching you how to avoid conflict in the first place. It improves your body, sharpens your mind, and strengthens your spirit.Bruce Lee’s vision was never about creating clones of himself. It was about helping each person discover their own path. By beginning JKD, you start a journey of personal growth that can impact every area of your life.To borrow Lee’s timeless advice:
“Absorb what is useful. Reject what is useless. Add what is uniquely your own.”
For beginners, this is the heart of Jeet Kune Do. You don’t need to be anyone else—you only need to begin.

Come along and begin your own martial arts journey.
